A Day in My Life at Harvard Law School

I’m happier than I imagined I would be, and I set the bar quite high

When people ask me how law school is going, I often say that it feels like I got a life transplant. I have new friends, a new routine, a new home, a new way of thinking about the world and my place in it. My life today is in many ways unrecognizable from my life one year ago, and I’m deeply grateful for that! I’m happier than I imagined I would be, and I set the bar quite high.

Still, my “old” life didn’t go away when I arrived to law school. No one’s did. It’s a strange juggling act where we throw ourselves into the law school bubble but, between class and studying, find brief moments to reconnect with ourselves and the important parts of our pre-law school lives. For me, that’s friends, family, working out, cooking my meals, this platform. While I’ve adjusted easily to law school, making time for these things has been a challenge. It probably wasn’t until the end of October that I felt I achieved some semblance of a “balance,” and I think that’s attributable to a few things: getting better and faster at reading, learning where I could cut corners (within reason), and caring a little bit less. After a month or two of doing everything to the nth degree, I realized that it’s neither sustainable nor productive. Still, I had to spend the beginning of law school reading slowly and carefully — there was no other way to gain the fundamental skill of reading and understanding legal language.

Now that my routine is more established and something I am proud of, I wanted to provide insight into what a day at Harvard Law School looks like. The particulars of each day are never really the same, but the overall flow is.
